I’ve got my grip on you. My fingers have found purchase, and there’s the kind of strength in my arm that’s not about to let go. My grip, you see, isn’t the kind that falters easily.
Do you know how a Hyena brings down their prey? And no, before you say it, Hyenas are not scavengers, any more than lions. Forget about Disney for a second. Do you know how they bring down their prey? No? Then be quiet at let me tell you.
The Hyena has the strongest jaw of any land animal. They can generate up to eight hundred kilograms of pressure with their anterior molars. That’s a veritable fuck tonne of pressure. And they use that to latch on to their prey, and hold on. And hold on. And hold on. Until this eight five kilo mammal just holds on until the antelope, or buffalo, or whatever else it’s managed to sink its teeth into collapses from exhaustion. They just grab on and ride it out. They’re the rodeo champions of the animal kingdom.
I mention this not because I’m the hyena that’s going to devour you, although with the right metaphorical license, I could very easily say that, but because I will ride whatever rodeo you throw at me once my teeth have sunk. Once that jaw pressure is clamped around your (metaphorical) rump, I’m not about to let go.
So thrash. And run. And squirm and struggle. And try to get away, try as hard as you can, because we both know that you’re not trying to get away. That your mind, or your body, might be freaking the fuck out, but the rest of you sees that grip in an entirely different light. The rest of you savours the touch, revels in how strong it is. The rest of you takes solace in that hold, and finds it to be the most reassuring thing on this green Earth.
And eventually that crazy, thrashing part of you is going to collapse from exhaustion, and me and the rest of you are going to have the time of our lives. So don’t worry, because I’m the rodeo champion of this kingdom. And I’m not going anywhere.
